The relations between master/servant, or tutor/pupil for example were often specified in terms of an idealized friendship and were essential to society. Rulers were considered to be the moral representatives of their people, and were required to set a good example: Kings, being public persons by reason of their office and authority, are, as it were setà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦upon a public stage, in the sight of all the people where all the beholders eyes are attentively bent to look and pry in the least circumstance of their secretest drifts. Which should make kings the more careful not to harbour the secretest thought in their mind, but such as in their own time they shall not be ashamed openly to avouch. (qtd. in Perry, 4) As a result, rulers had to control their feelings and personal desires for the sake of the countrys welfare and were not entitled to give up everything for, for instance, love or personal desires. This also meant that friendships should be chosen because of their counsel, nobility, and moral wisdom rather than for any more inward or subjective reason (Perry, 4), because rulers distributed wealth and power among these friends, meaning that is was imperative that these positions of power were granted to capable individuals for the benefit of the country and its citizens. Consequently, this had to be done according to reason and not according to subjective feelings. When decisions were made according to misguided reason and passion, political tyranny was the result, for the overthrow of reason by passion leads a ruler to violate the principles of moral rule.(4) Moreover, tyranny [was] often seen as effeminate and associated with moral weakness (8) because it results from the rulers inab ility to control his/her aspirations. And not kings only, but the wisest men (4. 390-396) However, Edward II and Gavestons desires constitute a cultural threat because they insist that their homoeroticism not be divorced from their political and social identities (Stymeist, 237), making it possible for Gaveston to gain access to power that he should never be able to obtain, and resulting in a [h]omoerotic desireà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦[that] enables a subversion of social hierarchy (Chedszoy, 256). Edward even places Gaveston next to him on the queens throne, underscoring the reversed, unnatural order present at court. Edwards fatal mistake, moreover, rests in his unnatural devotion to Gaveston while ignoring his peers and -more important- his homo-social obligation towards them. This game was a premier way of proving ones masculinity, because it is a physical and dangerous sport that required toughness, fitness, and an ability to control your horse; which implicated that you were able to control yourself (Flood, Women, Men, and Sex). Last, queen Isabella -one of the few women present in Marlowes play- plays a significant role and goes through the most radical transformation during the play which questions gender ideologies that existed at the time, ultimately resulting in her demise. As stated previously, women were stereotypically portrayed as acting out of unruly passions and desires, and they needed to be subordinate and controlled by men (Ryan, 132). At first, queen Isabella attempts to make her marriage succeed for her, and she endeavours at being patient and obedient wishing that that her marriage to Edward will turn out for the better and hoping that her husband will no longer reject her emotionally and sexually. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, signed into law by President Clinton on October 28, 1998, was written in an attempt to strike a balance between the rights of a work’s creator to receive adequate compensation and society’s fundamental right to freedom of information. The bottom line is that the objective of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is to prohibit all Internet users from accessing copyrighted materials on the Internet. The most renowned case where this is currently happening is A&M Records, Inc v. Napster Inc (Downing 2). The reason the DMCA creates such controversy is that many people believe that the Act puts all of the control into the creator’s hands, which, in truth, is not a balance at all. However, one cannot blame this lack of balance entirely on artists because the reality is that most artists do not own the right to their work, but the company with which they signed their contract owns the rights. The question remains as to how to word the DMCA in a way that will not only promote the rise of Internet business, but will protect people’s fundamental rights. The Act, as is, will not suffice, rather changes must be made before society allows their rights to be controlled by the big-money corporations that own most copyrights to influence the government with their money. We have one lead guitarist, two rhythm guitarists, (one who is in year 11 and the other is our music teacher), a bass player, and a drummer, (who is also in year 11). Holmes is a detective who is made for his job. He solves the problems by using his intelligence and power if deduction. He is an archetypal detective; his assistant Dr Watson is also an archetypal who is not as smart as the detective itself is. Dr Watson is the narrator of all the Sherlock Holmes stories. He is known as a doctor in every story because it would make the readers trust him and therefore believe in the stories told by him. Watson is shown as less skilful, lacking the reason skills compared to Holmes, this makes us the same level as well as him because he too doesn’t know what’s behind the curtains. If in any case the detective was to narrate the story to the reader, he/she would straight away give out who they suspect and spoil the tension rising. If we find out from a second persons point of view it would slowly build up tension because they too do not know what is going on behind the detective’s mind. The famous feature of Sherlock Holmes character is his intelligence, which he reveals very modestly. Sherlock Holmes talks very little compared to his visitors, and have the ability to listen completely attentively to every detail of his victim’s description, ‘Leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed†¦ ‘ (The Speckled Band) This shows that Sherlock Holmes obviously has some amazing powers of concentration and imagination as he questions the victim and considers the situation, this would give him a fair idea of the story before he leaves the room. Spaulding introduces him to the head of the operation, who is also red-headed. Poor Wilson had to work four hours everyday copying out the Encyclopaedia Britannica in an office. So far, he did eight weeks until he found the office locked. Holmes becomes excited at Spaulding description. That evening Holmes gathers the Scotland Yard police officer, Inspector Lestrade, Mr Merryweather, the director of the bank, to descend into its vault beneath the bank. They lay wait in the dark, until Spaulding was spotted descend into the vault. Later Holmes found out that his real name was John Clay, a criminal of who Holmes is well aware. There is a typical plot structure for most detective stories. They begin with an exposition, where we are then introduced to the characters involved and we learn something of their background. ‘†¦ he beat his native butler to death’ Dr Grimsby Roylott (The Speckled Band) This is when a little rise of tension begins. Next, someone arrives and announces a death or something dreadful that has happened. The tension is raised significantly. After that, the individuals who are suspected are investigated, or it could mean that they have collected clues. Often in most detective stories if the person suspected turns out to be innocent, then this is called a red herring. Finally, the perpetrator is revealed in a moment of high tension; generally, it is the last person the readers expect it to be. The guilty person admits their guilt and explains why they did it, and within this conclusion, the tension drops significantly. The moral message in all the stories is†¦ ‘What goes around comes around, ‘Dr Grimsby Rowlott tried to kill his second victim but got into his own trap. ‘The Speckled Band’ ‘Never commit theft because sooner or later you’ll get caught red handed,’ at the end John Clay was caught up with his guilt ‘The Red-Headed League’ ‘Never commit fraud or murder because it is a crime,’ kidnapping the child let the criminal to murdering an innocent person. ‘The Priory School’ In this coursework, I was told to read three books based on Arthur Canon Doyle. He wrote Detective stories and one of the famous detective stories ever told was about Sherlock Holmes. Doyle succeeded in writing the mystery stories and the perfect way of solving it. There was other writer like Agatha Christie who was well known worldwide and was famous for her incredible detective stories. One of he other author was J. B Priestly who wrote detective stories, but the difference between other authors and his was that his stories were always a moral crime, this means the criminal comes out in his own. In conclusion, I will say that using all these devices, Doyle successfully builds up inquisitiveness and hence mystery and intrigue. He uses little but heavy description; he is able to build up a powerful image into the readers mind and has the ability to shock the reader to submission. The way the whole truth is revealed is more dramatic and much more successful in entertaining the reader.
